Finding My Voice, My Personal Journey into Sound Healing
~Michele Spencer
Life has a funny way of rewriting itself. The plans we make for our future can drift away, steering us toward paths we never expected. About a decade ago, I had an experience that felt more like a turning point than a moment. It was an awakening—a shift in consciousness. A sudden change in how I saw the world and myself. The person I was before began to fade, and a new version of me started to emerge. I began a journey toward truth, stepping beyond old habits, fears, and the limitations I had carried. The things I once loved began to shift, and I found myself drawn toward new passions. Ten years later, I see life through a different lens. Happiness, peace, and service to others matter more than any paycheck or title. Music has always moved me, but my spiritual path has shown me something even deeper—the transformative power of sound healing.
What is sound healing? It is a therapeutic practice that uses sound frequencies and vibrations to promote well-being across physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions. This holistic view is based on the idea that everything is energy and can be influenced by sound. Science backs this up in surprising ways. The field of cymatics shows how sound can create beautiful patterns in materials, and research by Dr. Masaru Emoto suggested that sound can affect the structure of water molecules. More importantly, sound has the power to alter our consciousness and awareness. Many ancient cultures and indigenous communities have used sound for healing and to access deeper states of awareness for thousands of years.
Sound healing sits at the crossroads of science and spirituality, blending measurable vibrations with a sense of something greater than ourselves. As frequencies wash over the body, they can align breath, heart rate, and mood, creating a tangible sense of balance. At the same time, many people experience sound as a doorway to deeper awareness, connection, and meaning—an invitation to quiet the mind, listen inward, and feel part of a larger, timeless rhythm. In this view, healing isn’t just physical restoration; it’s a spiritual re-tuning that invites profound transformation.
In practice, sound healing encompasses techniques such as meditation, chanting, toning, and overtone singing, using instruments like crystal bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, and tuning forks to carry healing frequencies. Drumming, binaural beats, and guided meditations are also common tools that help calm the mind, align the body, and enhance creativity. At its heart, sound healing aims to connect us with a larger, timeless rhythm, fostering compassion, gratitude, and a sense of interconnectedness with others, the planet, and the universe.
Last year, a nearby school offered a focused path in this field. I attended a two-day workshop that felt almost like a door opening, and the experience confirmed that I was meant to pursue sound healing. I decided to enroll in the sound healing certificate program. The program has been eye-opening. We explored topics such as resonance, music theory, sacred geometry, chanting, mantras, tuning forks, energetic boundaries, chakra healing, and the therapeutic potential of the human voice. It’s a depth I hadn’t anticipated, and it resonates with me on a deep level.
I also hold a strong belief that life isn’t guided by random events or mere coincidences. I think there is a kind of divine timing at work—moments when the universe nudges us toward the exact opportunities and people we need. That belief has led me to a specific path in sound healing and to mentors who have helped me see how to turn this fascination into something meaningful.
My studies have introduced me to a community of teachers and practitioners who view sound not just as art, but as a healing tool with real potential to shift states of mind and body. I’ve learned how different frequencies can influence mood, energy, and even physiology. The idea that sound can tame anxiety, ease tension, or bring a sense of calm is powerful to me. It’s not just about listening to music; it’s about listening to the body and learning how to communicate with it through vibration.
As I continue this journey, I’m discovering how vast sound healing really is. It blends science with spirituality, technique with intuition, and personal growth with community healing. Some days I’m surprised by how practical this work feels—how easy it is to bring a little harmony into someone’s day with the right tone, breath, and intention. Other days, I’m reminded of the deep mystery that still surrounds it, and I’m grateful to be part of a path that invites curiosity and care.
If you’re curious about sound healing, I invite you to listen to your own body, your inner voice, and the sounds around you. You don’t have to travel far to begin. A simple moment of quiet, a breath, a singing note, or the rhythm of your own heartbeat can be the first steps toward greater awareness and well-being. For me, this journey is about more than mastering techniques; it’s about aligning with a purpose—to use sound as a bridge to compassion, connection, and healing for myself and others.
Looking ahead, I’m eager to deepen my studies, practice regularly, and be of service to anyone who wants to explore this path. Sound has a way of meeting us where we are, and sometimes it invites us to rise to a brighter version of ourselves. If you’re ever drawn to the idea of healing through sound, I hope you’ll explore it with an open heart and see where your own note might lead you.
