Naturally formed Lava Cave on the Big Island of Hawaii. Lava caves or tubes are totally dark and silent inside. Tubes are a type of lava cave that forms when an active lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still-flowing lava stream. Tubes can form by the crusting over of a lava channel or from flows where the lava is moving under the surface. Lava is held sacred by native Hawaiians because certain types of lava hold a different, and to them, sacred type of energy.
